XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is an XML-based framework designed to improve the usefulness of business and financial data. With XBRL, financial facts can be tagged in such a way that computers can "understand" more about those facts. The SEC has required large accelerated filers, including MetLife, Inc., to begin submitting XBRL information for quarterly and annual reports containing financial statements for fiscal periods ending on or after June 15, 2009, and for current reports that revise or update those financial statements.
For additional information on XBRL, you may visit the SEC's XBRL website: http://www.sec.gov/spotlight/xbrl.shtml.
